Free flight time calculator

Add or subtract pilot flight times in hours and minutes. Total multiple HH:MM logbook entries, including totals over 24 hours.

Values are flight durations, not clock times. Use + or − on each row; blank rows are ignored.

Enter flight durations in hours and minutes (HH:MM), not local or UTC clock times. Hours may exceed 23 when totaling logbook pages.

Total flight time

00:00

What this tool computes

A running total of flight time in hours and minutes from multiple logbook-style durations. Each row is added or subtracted using integer-minute arithmetic, with correct carry and borrow. Totals are not limited to a 24-hour clock and may be negative when subtractions exceed additions.

Inputs

  • One or more durations in HH:MM form (hours may be one or more digits; minutes are exactly two digits from 00 to 59).
  • An operation per row: add (+) or subtract (−). The sign is not entered inside the duration field.
  • Blank rows are ignored until you enter a value.

Reading the results

  • The cumulative total formatted as HH:MM with at least two hour digits and two minute digits.
  • Zero displays as 00:00 without a minus sign.
  • Negative totals show a leading minus, for example −01:15.
  • When any entered row is invalid, the total is hidden until all non-empty rows are valid.

How to use it

  1. Enter each flight or ground time from your logbook as HH:MM on its own row.
  2. Choose Add for time to include and Subtract for corrections or debits.
  3. Use Add another time for each extra line; remove rows you no longer need.
  4. Clear all resets to a single blank addition row and 00:00.

Worked example

Monthly aircraft total from three lines

  1. Row 1: Add 100:40 (accumulated time on the aircraft).
  2. Row 2: Add 25:35 (time flown this month).
  3. Row 3: Subtract 00:20 (a correction entry).
  4. The calculator shows 125:55 — no conversion to decimal hours required.

Formula and assumptions

Each valid duration converts to integer minutes; additions and subtractions sum in minutes, then convert back to hours and minutes.

Minute carry and borrow follow normal base-60 rules (for example 00:50 + 00:25 → 01:15).

Totals above 24:00 are preserved (for example 23:30 + 02:15 → 25:45).

This tool performs arithmetic only; it does not apply regulatory flight- or duty-time limits.

Limitations

  • HH:MM durations only — no decimal-hour input or conversion.
  • No date, timezone, or block-time arithmetic; for night minutes along a route, use the Night Time tool.
  • No CSV or logbook import; totals are not saved to a Pilotflows account from this page.
  • Does not replace operator or authority logging rules.

Automatic flight-hour totals in Pilot logbook

Pilotflows totals flight time, night, and instrument time on each entry, rolls up reports by aircraft and period, and exports authority-ready PDFs — no manual HH:MM adding on paper.
