What is a flight duty period (FDP)?

An FDP starts when a crew member is required to report for a duty that includes a sector (or series of sectors) and ends when the aircraft finally comes to rest after the last sector on which they act as an operating crew member.

How does EASA minimum rest work?

Under ORO.FTL.235, minimum rest at home base is the greater of the preceding duty period or 12 hours. Away from home base it is the greater of the preceding duty period or 10 hours, including an 8-hour sleep opportunity.

How is FAA Part 117 rest different from EASA?

Accepted Answer

Part 117 § 117.25 requires at least 10 consecutive hours of rest immediately before an FDP or reserve, including 8 uninterrupted hours of sleep opportunity. Unlike EASA, the statutory floor does not increase with the length of the preceding duty. Crews must also have 30 consecutive hours free from duty in the past 168 hours.
