Assumptions: freefall uses exit minus deployment with 10 s for the first 1,000 ft and +5.5 s per additional 1,000 ft; wing loading uses exit weight in pounds divided by canopy area.
Wing loading is exit weight divided by canopy area; it is not a canopy recommendation. Confirm equipment choices with a qualified instructor, rigger, manufacturer guidance, and applicable dropzone rules.
Freefall time is an estimate only — not a substitute for an audible/visual altimeter, deployment planning, training, or logged jump data.

What this tool computes
Jump totals and tandem/solo mix from your entered counts, estimated freefall time per jump from exit and deployment altitude, cumulative freefall time across all jumps, and wing loading from exit weight and main canopy size. Outputs stay neutral — no canopy sizing advice.
Inputs
- Tandem and solo jump counts (solo means any non-tandem jump).
- Typical exit altitude in feet AGL when you want a freefall estimate.
- Typical deployment altitude in feet AGL (default 3,500 ft).
- Exit weight: you in gear — jumper, clothing, rig, and everything you carry on exit.
- Weight unit toggle: pounds or kilograms.
- Main canopy size in square feet.
- Optional canopy manufacturer/model label for your reference only.
Reading the results
- Total jumps is tandem plus solo.
- Tandem and solo percentages appear when total jumps is greater than zero.
- Freefall seconds per jump uses the rule-of-thumb below; cumulative time multiplies by total jumps.
- Wing loading is exit weight in pounds divided by canopy area, shown as lb/ft².
- Incomplete or invalid inputs show an em dash (—) instead of a number.
How to use it
- Enter how many tandem and solo jumps you have logged so far.
- Add typical exit and deployment altitudes if you want freefall estimates.
- Enter exit weight under load and your current main canopy size for wing loading.
- Use the results for quick checks; log official jump data in a dedicated logbook.
Worked example
Wing loading with a 170 ft² main
- Exit weight: 200 lb (about 90.72 kg produces the same wing loading after conversion).
- Main canopy: 170 ft².
- Wing loading = 200 ÷ 170 ≈ 1.18 lb/ft² (rounded to two decimals).
Formula and assumptions
Wing loading (lb/ft²) = exit weight in pounds ÷ canopy area in square feet. Kilograms convert with 1 kg = 2.2046226218 lb.
Freefall distance = exit altitude − deployment altitude. For the first 1,000 ft of distance, time scales proportionally to 10 seconds at 1,000 ft. Above that, add 5.5 seconds per additional 1,000 ft.
Cumulative freefall time = estimated seconds per jump × total jumps.
Freefall time varies with body position, discipline, equipment, deployment sequence, and conditions — treat the output as an estimate only.
Limitations
- Not a gear inventory, reserve tracking tool, or canopy recommendation engine.
- Does not store data between visits; nothing is sent to a server.
- Freefall estimates are not a substitute for altimeters, deployment planning, training, or logged jump data.
- Wing loading alone does not determine whether a canopy is appropriate for you.
